June is Brain Injury Awareness Month

In Canada, brain injury is the number one killer and disabler of people under the age of 44. Statistics further indicate that incidences are two times greater within the male population. Coaches can play a vital role in preventing and ensuring the well-being of all athletes in the case of a suspected head trauma. Here's what you can do to get educated on the topic:

  1. Contact your local brain injury association and talk to an expert
  2. Research. SIRC has a number of articles and resources on the subject
  3. Get Educated.There are a number of seminars, including NCCP Module Prevention and Recovery of Injuries
  4. Implement a return to play policy. Hockey Canada has some great samples and guidelines
 

SUPPORT WORLD NO TOBACCO-DAY BY ADOPTING A TOBACCO-FREE POLICY

tobacco_logoSport and recreation organizations across Ontario are encouraged to show their support for World No Tobacco Day by creating and adopting a tobacco-free policy. Tobacco remains the leading cause of death and preventable disease in Ontario and it is important to send a clear message:  Tobacco has no place in sport and recreation activities.  To assist in this process, Play, Live, Be Tobacco-Free, an Ontario-wide movement supported by public health, sport, and recreation, is providing more than 100 grants of up to $500 for the creation and promotion of tobacco-free policies.

Ontario Coaches Receive Chevrolet Making Dreams Possible Grants

GM_Trent_Swim_ClubOn May 12, 2010, ten Canadian high performance coaches and their Olympic hopeful athletes were each awarded a $10,000 grant for coach development through Chevrolet's Making Dreams Possible Program. In addition, 51 community clubs from across Canada each received a grant of $2,000 for coach training and development activities. Congratulations to Ontario Coaches Brianne Law (Paralympic Alpine Skiing), and Anthony McCleary (Athletics) and to the following Ontario Clubs who were among the recipients:
