LTAD for Coaches

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR COACHES?

"The health and well-being of the nation and the medals won at major Games are simple by-products of an effective sport system."

Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) focuses on the general framework of athlete development with special reference to growth, maturation and development, trainability, and sport system alignment and integration. Based on the physical, mental, emotional, and cognitive development of children and adolescents, each stage reflects a different point in athlete development.

To be successful, an athlete development model such as LTAD requires highly skilled, certified coaches who understand the stages of athlete development and the various interventions that should be made. Each National Sport Organization (NSO) is working towards applying the principles of LTAD in a sport-specific environment. The NCCP multi-sport modules have integrated the LTAD principles and ensure that coaches can play a leadership role in bringing about the changes implied within LTAD. To learn more about the LTAD model, please visit www.ltad.ca. To download the LTAD/NCCP model, click here.
